On the evening of September 6, 1959, the circuit staged a $10,000 Formula Libre race, a high-stakes open-formula event that drew prominent drivers from around the country. According to reporting in the Evening Star (Washington, D.C.) dated September 7, 1959, the race resulted in a serious accident involving Miami driver Jim Rathmann, whose sports car overturned more than ten times during the event. Rathmann was subsequently transported to an Elgin hospital for observation; x-rays indicated he had suffered a minor concussion, and he was listed in fair condition.
