Military service. Prior to settling in Dundee, Cleveland served as First Lieutenant in Company A, Ninth Vermont Volunteer Infantry from 1862 to 1865, during the Civil War. (Source: Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Kane County (1904))
Episcopal ministry. Cleveland was ordained a deacon in April 1879 and advanced to the priesthood in September 1886. He engaged in ministerial work at St. James Parish, the Episcopal church serving Dundee and the adjacent territory. His ordination came more than a decade after he had already established himself as a physician in the community, suggesting his clerical vocation developed alongside — rather than in place of — his medical career.
