John Crichton

John Crichton was a pioneer settler of Dundee Township, Kane County, Illinois, active during the nineteenth century. He is known primarily through a brief reference in a biographical account of his son-in-law, William H. Ervin, and few additional details about his life have been recovered from available sources.

Known Activities

According to the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Kane County (1904), Crichton was established in Dundee Township sufficiently early to be characterized as a pioneer settler of the area. His daughter, Margaret Crichton Ervin, married William H. Ervin in 1878, at which time Ervin settled on a farm approximately 3.5 miles northwest of Dundee village. It is possible, though not confirmed by the available source, that Crichton's presence in the township influenced Ervin's decision to settle in the area. Possible connection (2026-08-18): a 1966 family genealogy of John and Janet Hamilton Crichton|John and Janet Hamilton Crichton — Scottish immigrants who came to Dundee in the 1830s–40s — lists a grandchild named "Margaret Crichton Ervin" among its descendants. The name, generation, and geography all plausibly match this page's Margaret Crichton (m. William H. Ervin, 1878), which would make this John Crichton a descendant of that immigrant couple rather than an unconnected pioneer. Flagged as probable, not confirmed — see the notes on the immigrant-couple page before merging.

This page is a stub. John Crichton is mentioned only incidentally in the source record. Further research in township land records, census data, and local newspapers may yield additional biographical detail.
