Kellogg settled in Dundee Township during the pioneer era, a period of rapid and often contentious land acquisition across Kane County. According to his 1885 account, claim-jumping — the practice of seizing or contesting land already informally claimed by another settler — was widespread and considered a serious social ill (Source: History of Kane County, Ill., Vol. 1 (Joslyn, 1908)).
Kellogg's chronicle describes how settlers in Dundee Township organized themselves to address these disputes, including the appointment of community committees to hear and adjudicate competing claims. He recorded that land claim sizes varied considerably, ranging from two eighties of prairie and one of timber up to half sections, and that settlers sometimes used proxies to hold land on behalf of relatives and friends who had not yet arrived — a practice that left newly arriving settlers finding the most desirable timber and prairie already spoken for (Source: History of Kane County, Ill., Vol. 1 (Joslyn, 1908)).
His account also touches on a specific dispute between settler Thomas Deweese and James C. Hanks, a conflict over a land claim that escalated to physical violence. Kellogg's documentation of such episodes provides one of the few detailed settler perspectives on how these confrontations unfolded and were — or were not — resolved through community intervention (Source: History of Kane County, Ill., Vol. 1 (Joslyn, 1908)).
Beyond land disputes, Kellogg's 1885 account reportedly touched on other aspects of pioneer life in Dundee Township, including the severity with which horse stealing was treated, the central role of religious life, and the presence of circuit preachers before formal churches were established (Source: History of Kane County, Ill., Vol. 1 (Joslyn, 1908)).
