James C Hanks

James C. Hanks was a pioneer settler in Dundee Township during the early settlement period of Kane County, Illinois. He is remembered primarily through a brief but vivid account preserved in Jesse C. Kellogg's 1885 recollection of land claim disputes in the Dundee area, in which Hanks appears as a party to a physical altercation over competing land claims.

Known Activities

Hanks was involved in a land dispute with fellow settler Thomas Deweese during the pioneer era of Dundee township. According to Kellogg's account, as cited in the History of Kane County, Ill. (Joslyn, 1908), Deweese knocked Hanks down with a stone in the course of their conflict over a contested land claim. (Source: History of Kane County, Ill., Vol. 1 (Joslyn, 1908))

The dispute was characteristic of a broader pattern of claim-jumping that Kellogg described as a "universal and extensive evil" throughout Kane County during the settlement period. Settlers routinely claimed land on behalf of relatives and friends using proxies, and newcomers often found desirable timber and prairie tracts already monopolized. Committees were sometimes appointed to adjudicate such disputes, though conflicts frequently escalated to threats and violence before any resolution was reached. No further details about Hanks — including his origins, the ultimate resolution of his dispute with Deweese, or his subsequent history in the area — are recorded in the available source.
