Griffith came to Kane County, Illinois in 1865 at approximately twelve years of age, receiving his early education in the public schools of Dundee Township. He grew to manhood on a farm in the township, gaining the agricultural background common to many of his contemporaries in the region. In 1873, Griffith became connected with the Illinois Iron & Bolt Company, a manufacturing concern operating in Kane County. He advanced within the organization over the following decades and was serving as its Secretary by 1888, a role he still held at the time of the 1904 publication of the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Kane County.
